Another badly insulated attic in Quebec and ways to fix it
Challenge
Attics are one of the most common areas of mold growth in the home. Attics tend to have the perfect conditions for mold growth (hot, humid, and an abundant food source from the wood sheathing). Furthermore, most homeowners don’t ever go up in their attic, so the mold problem is allowed to grow undisturbed – sometimes for years!
So when mr. Leduc contacted Systèmes Éconergie, it was because he wanted to have the insulation of his attic evaluated. He felt cold drafts in the house and noticed that the heating costs were getting higher and higher.
Solution
Our home comfort specialist inspected his attic and noticed two issues: lack of insulation and cardboard vents in the soffits. There was only 6-9” of cellulose in the attic which is nothing even near an R19 value.
Our team will bring the attic back to an R60 value by adding just over 12” of cellulose fiber and replacing the cardboard vents with plastic baffles. This will make the house much more comfortable in both winter and summer and will also reduce energy costs.
