Mrs. Eaves contacted Systèmes Éconergie because she had problems with an ice dam on the roof of her house in winter. Ice dams form because the attic is insufficiently insulated and ventilated. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms along a roof’s edge. It prevents melted snow from draining off the roof, causing the snowmelt to back up and damage the roof.
Actually, In the attic of her house, there were only 10 inches of fiberglass insulation, which was far from enough.
To improve the comfort of her home as well as eliminate ice dams, we removed the old insulation and sealed all the air leaks present on the attic floor with our expanded polyurethane foam. And then we blew just over 16” of cellulose fibers to achieve an R-60 value.
During winter, ice dams and huge icicles have been formed on the roof of Mrs. Forget's house. A lack of insulation in the attic is the cause of this problem. Mrs. Forget had even re-insulated her attic a few years ago with another company, but the same problem was recurring.
To solve our client's problem, our experts removed the fiberglass insulation that was in the attic to seal all the air leaks (joints and holes that are on the attic floor) with foam expanded. Subsequently, they added deflectors in the soffits to allow better ventilation in the attic. Finally, they blew just over 16'' of cellulose fibers to achieve an R-60 value.
With this solution, Mrs. Forget will no longer have a problem with ice dams or icicles on her roof in winter.
