Challenge
Poor insulation had several negative impacts on the house:
Increased Hydro Bills: Inefficient insulation forced the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system to work harder to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, leading to significantly higher energy costs.
Poor Indoor Air Quality: Decaying insulation could harbor mold, which could spread into the air of the house, potentially causing health problems.
Structural Damage: Moisture accumulation in the attic not only degraded the insulation but also endangered the integrity of the roof and ceiling structure below.
Solution
Removal of the Old Insulation: The first step involved carefully removing the existing rotten insulation. This task was carried out with safety precautions to avoid the spread of mold spores and other contaminants throughout the house.
Air Sealing: After removing the old insulation, the team meticulously sealed all sources of air leaks. This step was crucial to prevent warm air from escaping in winter and hot air from entering in summer.
Installation of Cellulose Insulation: Once the attic was properly sealed, the team blew in cellulose insulation. Cellulose was chosen for its excellent thermal performance, environmental friendliness, and fire resistance. The insulation was installed to achieve a thermal resistance value of R60.
